India A v England XI, Warm-up match, Mumbai, 1st day

Tiwary's 93 Gives India 'A' The Edge

Mumbai: Manoj Tiwary's fighting 93 tilted the balance in India 'A's favour as they posted 369-9 after electing to bat against England in a practice game at the Brabourne Stadium here, on Tuesday.

Tiwary's knock build on opener Abhinav Mukund's attacking 73 and Yuvraj Singh's 59. Tiwary added 110 with all-rounder Irfan Pathan for the 7th wicket, after a series of England strikes had left India 'A' reeling on 190 for six. The 26-year-old batsman struck 12 fours in his 150-ball knock, missing out on a century when he was bowled by a Tim Bresnan yorker in the 86th over.

India had earlier begun strongly through Mukund, who endured a scratchy initial phase to play the role of a aggressor after captain Suresh Raina elected to bat. Mukund did the bulk of the scoring, as fellow opener M. Vijay and No.3 Ajinkya Rahane got out cheaply.

Viay was run out in the 8th over of the day, while Rahane perished to a rising Bresnan delivery. Mukund and Yuvraj then added 56, as both batsmen found the boundary with ease.  Mukund had been streaky earlier in his innings, but got into the groove to spank 16 fours in his 83-ball stay. He was dismissed in the last over before lunch by offie Graeme Swann.

Yuvraj was dropped by Samit Patel off Bresnan on the first ball he faced, but grew in confidence thereafter. He struck two sixes apiece off Swann ad Patel, and also had seven hits to the fence in his 80-ball 59, before he gave Swann the charge and was stumped.

Skipper Raina, another contender for the No.6 spot, made 20 and Wriddhiman Saha made 20 as well, as India 'A' found themselves on 190-6 despite all batsmen save for Vijay and Rahane getting starts.
