Shakib Ruled Out of Sri Lanka Tour

Dhaka: Bangladesh Sunday named middle-order batsman Mominul Haque to replace Shakib Al Hasan in next month's Test series against Sri Lanka after the star all-rounder was ruled out due to injury.

Bangladesh will play two Tests, three one-dayers and one Twenty20 during their month-long tour of Sri Lanka, with the first Test starting at Galle on March 8.

Shakib, the 25-year-old former national captain, will have an operation in Australia this week for a shinbone injury which he has been suffering all season.

"He is expected to be able to resume playing four to six weeks after the surgery," said Bangladesh Cricket Board physician Debashis Chowdhury, adding that Shakib would also need longer-term treatment for other injuries.

Mominul Haque is a left-handed batsman and occasional spinner.

Chief selector Akram Khan said it would not be easy to manage without Shakib, especially against Sri Lanka in home conditions. "But the reality is we are not getting him this time."

"We have taken into consideration Mominul's performance over the last one year. He has been impressive," Khan said, adding left-arm spinner Enamul Haque, batsman Jahurul Islam and seamer Robiul Islam were also recalled for the Tests.

Shakib has played 28 Test matches, scoring 1,835 runs at an average of 35.98 and bagged 102 wickets. He has scored 3,635 runs at 35.63 average in 126 one-dayers and claimed 160 wickets.

Test squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (captain), Mohammad Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal, Shahriar Nafees, Anamul Haque, Naeem Islam, Nasir Hossain, Sohag Gazi, Abul Hasan, Rubel Hossain, Enamul Haque, Jahurul Islam, Mominul Hoque, Shahadat Hossain, Robiul Islam.
