England v Australia, 2nd ODI, Old Trafford

Clarke Star as Australia Romp Home

Manchester: Michael Clarke smashed a superb century as Australia won the 2nd ODI at Old Trafford in clinical fashion to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Michael Clarke is the Man of the Match for his hundred.

Despite fifties from Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler, the hosts were dismissed for 227.

England named a strong batting line-up with Ben Stokes at number eight but were arguably a bowler light, relying on Ravi Bopara and Joe Root to deliver 12 overs.

Opener Michael Carberry, making his home ODI debut, struggled before picking out Clarke at backward point off an inspired Mitchell Johnson for just four and Jonathan Trott departed in the same over for a duck attempting to fend off a wicked lifting delivery.

After Joe Root was bowled by James Faulkner, Pietersen, appearing for the first time as a ODI opener on home soil, gave England a glimmer of hope with two sixes in his 66-ball knock.

But once he fell to Watson for 60 it was game over with Bopara falling caught and bowled to Adam Voges before Morgan went for 54, caught in the deep to give Clint McKay a deserved first wicket.

Although Buttler scored a defiant 75 off 65 balls before giving Fawad Ahmed his first international wicket against England, the hosts were bowled out for just 227 and will head to Edgbaston on Wednesday with plenty of food for thought.

Earlier, Clarke's 105, only his eight hundred in 229 matches at this level, came on the same ground where just over a month ago he made 187 in the drawn third Test .

He received excellent support from vice-captain George Bailey (82) in a fifth-wicket stand of 155 as Australia made their highest one-day international score against England in England, surpassing their 302 for six at Nottingham's Trent Bridge in 2009.

Steve Finn dismissed Shaun Marsh caught behind with only the fourth ball of the match. Next ball it seemed Shane Watson had fallen in familiar fashion, lbw aiming across the line.

However, Watson signalled for a review and, after several minutes, third umpire Aleem Dar concluded the all-rounder had got a thin edge before the ball struck the pad.

But Watson was out on 38 to a reviewed decision after England had seen their original appeal for caught behind off medium-pacer Ravi Bopara turned down.

Finch's run-a-ball 45 ended when Tredwell, from round the wicket, had him driving straight to Joe Root at long-on.

Faulkner, however, saw Australia to 300 with a six in Rankin's last over.

Earlier, England have won the toss and decided to bowl first.

England made three changes to the team that beat Ireland: Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and Joe Root replacing Luke Wright, James Taylor and Gary Ballance.

Australia have named the same team as in the 200-run win over Scotland.
