England v India, 2nd Investec Test, Lord's

Plunkett and Vijay Infuse Life in Test

London: England took three wickets on the third evening to leave the second Test against India at Lord's in the balance.

Liam Plunkett struck twice in two balls and Stuart Broad moments later, but Murali Vijay's unbeaten 59 helped India close on 169-4 - a lead of 145.

Earlier, England added 100 to their overnight total in being bowled out for 319, Plunkett hitting an unbeaten 55 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar taking 6-82.

There have been only six higher fourth-innings chases in Tests at Lord's.

Rahane was unfortunate to be given out as replays showed that the short ball from Broad had come off his arm-guard as Matt Prior ran diagonally forward to take a diving catch. Pujara uncharacteristically poked at a ball outside offstump bringing Prior into play behind the wickets. Kohli's bad run in the series continued as he failed to read the line of the ball and got bowled for a duck.

Dhoni's men led England by 60 runs going into tea at 84 for 1. Shikhar Dhawan was the casualty the tourists suffered when the left-hander hit an innocuous Ben Stokes delivery straight into the hands of Joe Root at point. Dhawan made 31.

Earlier in the day, Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up a career-best 6 for 82 as India bowled England out for 319. The Indians couldn't keep England within their total of 295 thanks largely to the last-wicket 39-run stand between Plunkett and James Anderson.

The hosts resumed the day on 219 for 6 and Prior and Plunkett played impressively taking the team past 250. However, Mohammed Shami, against the run of play, got rid of Prior who got a leading edge off a short ball. Dhawan had to run backwards from the slips to complete a nice catch. The England wicketkeeper-batsman made 23.

Twenty-three balls later Bhuvneshwar got in on the act, cleaning up Ben Stokes for a duck with an incoming delivery. With the Stokes wicket, the Uttar Pradesh bowler completed his second Test five-for. His first came in the last game at Nottingham. Two balls later, the Indian medium pacer struck again, this time accounting for Broad (4) who gave a simple catch to Dhawan in the slips.

Plunkett and Anderson annoyed the Indians for a while, picking up one boundary after another before Ravindra Jadeja ended Anderson's innings on 19. Plunkett remained unbeaten on 55, his first Test fifty.
