England v India, 2nd Investec Test, Lord's

Ishant's Seven Wickets Boosts India End Overseas Drought

London: England slump to a crushing 95-run defeat in the second Test at Lord's as India take a 1-0 lead in the series.

The England batsmen also played some horrible shots to help Sharma and India's cause a great deal. Joe Root (66), Matt Prior (12), Ben Stokes (0) were all guilty of poor shot selection as Sharma picked up his sixth five-for in Tests.

With the wicket of Stuart Broad - another victim of short-pitched bowling as he nicked one on his ribcage straight through to MS Dhoni down the leg side - the lanky Sharma (7 for 74) also registered his best bowling figures in Tests.

It was also his third five-for this year, the previous two came earlier this year in New Zealand. Ravindra Jadeja's ran James Anderson (2) out with a direct throw to seal the match in India's favour.

However, the wicket that opened the floodgates for the tourists was that of Moeen Ali off the last ball of the first session. Ali and Root had added 99 run when Sharma got one ball to kick up and Ali awkwardly fended it off to Cheteshwar Pujara at short-leg.

Root and Ali defied the Indian bowlers for the most part of the opening session. England resumed the day on 105 for 4 with India in the driver's seat but the duo's doggedness frustrated the tourist bowlers, giving plenty of hope to the home side.

Root completed his fifth fifty in style, hitting Sharma for three fours in an over.

India captain MS Dhoni used Jadeja, Shikhar Dhawan, Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami in the session. Jadeja bowled into the rough outside the right-hander's leg stump for the most part of his spell and despite several jumping balls he couldn't get the better of the batsmen.

Just when it looked like England will go into the break in a solid position, Sharma's removal of Ali changed the complexion of the match.

The third Test in Southampton starts on Sunday.
