India v South Africa, 2nd Test, Bangalore, day 1

All-round India Take Honours on Opening Day

Bangalore: Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay took India side to 80 for no loss at stumps on the first day of the second Test in Bangalore on Saturday, after South Africa dismisses on 214>

India trail by further 134 runs of the second Test in Bangalore on Saturday.

India continued to dominate  the world No. 1 South Africa in the ongoing four-match Test series, as they had yet another day replete with domination at Bengaluru.

Dhawan, who bagged a pair in the first Test at Mohali was in full flow on Saturday, as strokes came out of his bat with the same dexterity that can be seen in a batsman in form. He scored 45 not out off 62 balls, and smashed seven boundaries.

Alongside Dhawan was the right-handed Vijay, who was given a lifeline by Imran Tahir when the Indian opener was on 21. In the 16th over, Morne Morkel dropped one short and Vijay got enticed to play an aggressive stroke. At the end of the day’s play, Vijay was on 28 not out off 73 balls with five hits to the fence.

After winning the toss, India took the brave decision of bowling first, made interesting changes to their team composition, and backed them up by shooting out South Africa for a paltry 214 in the first innings.

Ashwin and Jadeja maintained a complete stranglehold over the tourists as they claimed four wickets each.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Varun Aaron claimed the crucial wicket of team captain Hashim Amla for seven.

Batting mainstay AB de Villiers, who is playing in his 100th Test match, provided a solid resistance by scoring a defiant 85.

The Proteas, down 1-0 in the four-match series, were reduced to 120-5 after being sent in to bat in overcast conditions at the Chinnaswamy stadium before going to tea on 177-7.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin wreaked havoc with the top order claiming three of the first five wickets, including two in his first over when he was brought on to bowl the eighth over.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja also picked up four wickets, including the important one of de Villiers off the last ball before tea, caught by a diving wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha in front of the stumps.

De Villiers hit 11 boundaries and a six, having walked in at 45-3 to generous applause from some 23,000 fans who regard him as one of their own due to his stint with the Bangalore team in the Indian Premier League. He got off the mark with five runs, courtesy of an overthrow by Indian captain Virat Kohli that raced to the fence. He followed that with a sweetly-timed on-drive off fast bowler Varun Aaron for a boundary and pulled Ashwin to the square-leg fence.

Ashwin trapped Stiaan van Zyl (10) leg-before with his second delivery and had Faf du Plessis (0) caught at short-leg by Cheteshwar Pujara off the fifth to make it 15-2.

Aaron claimed the key wicket of Hashim Amla (7) in the 15th over, uprooting the captain's off-stump as the Proteas were reduced to 45-3.

Opener Dean Elgar, who plodded to 38 by lunch, was dismissed off the second ball after resumption when he dragged an attempted sweep off Jadeja onto his stumps.
