England v Pakistan, 1st Test, Lord's, day 1

Misbah-ul-Haq Hits Century on Even Opening Day

London: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq scored an unbeaten ton against England on the opening day of the first Test to become the oldest centurion in 82 years.

After winning the toss, Misbah, 42, hit 110 not out and put on 148 for the fifth wicket with Asad Shafiq (73).

Chris Woakes took four wickets for England while debutant Jake Ball dismissed Azhar Ali to claim his first Test match wicket.

Stuart Broad was England's only other wicket-taker on a placid Lord's wicket.

However, what remarkable is that he achieved this incredible feat at the age of 42.

Misbah made his Test debut back in 2001 against New Zealand at Auckland but was dropped due to poor performance. He was made captain after the infamous Lord’s Test between these two teams in 2010, which surfaced the spot-fixing scandal.

Ever since he became captain, Pakistan lost only one Test match, in a span of 5 years. In 61 matches, he has churned out 4,352 runs at 48.89, inclusive of 10 hundred and 32 half-centuries.

Misbah brought up his spectacular hundred by guiding a back-of-length delivery to third man. He acknowledged the crowd by taking off his helmet.

Pakistan were 77 for 3 when Misbah came out to bat. The top-order was already in the pavilion. The ball had already lost the shine, thus, there was not enough lateral movement to run through the Pakistan’s middle-order.

Like Misbah has been doing over the years, he rose to the occasion and took his team out of the woods. In the last six matches between these two teams,
