India v England, 3rd Test, Mohali, day 2

Ashwin, Jadeja lead India fightback

Chandigarh: England produced an outstanding bowling and fielding display to drag themselves back into contention on day two of the second Test against India in Mohali.

After wrapping up the England innings for 283 in the first four overs of the day, India were well placed at 148-2.

But the tourists took three wickets for eight runs, before Ben Stokes removed India captain Virat Kohli for 62.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja then shared an unbroken stand of 67 as India closed on 271-6, 12 behind.

India are looking to that pair and the rest of their tail to build a lead on the third morning against a ball that is only four overs old.

England will want to mop up the innings quickly, then put in a much-improved display in their second attempt on a surface that remains good for batting.

Ravichandran Ashwin (57 batting) and Ravindra Jadeja (31 batting) were in the middle at stumps.

Adil Rashid claimed three wickets for England while Ben STokes got two.

England were all out for 283 runs in their first innings.

England skipper Alastair Cook put pressure on the Indian batsmen by rotating his quick bowlers with an attacking off-side field as the opposition runs briefly dried up.

But Pujara and Kohli weathered the storm with their rock solid defence, the batting duo putting on an 75-run partnership for the third wicket.

Returning wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel (42) gave the hosts a sturdy start before being trapped lbw off leg-spinner Adil Rashid in the fourth over after lunch.

Patel, who returned to the Test side after a gap of eight years, was given not out by the on-field umpire but England successfully reviewed the decision in their favour.

The left-handed batsman, who had himself benefited from the DRS after reversing a caught behind decision off Chris Woakes early in his innings, hit six boundaries during his 85-ball stay.

Seam bowler Stokes had given the visitors their first breakthrough in the first session after he got opener Murali Vijay caught behind for 12.

The visitors, who resumed the day on 268 for 8, were bowled out inside four overs with India's Mohammed Shami claiming three wickets in the innings.

India lead the five-match series 1-0.
