Guptill century guides New Zealand to series level win

Hamilton: Opener Martin Guptill cracked a brilliant unbeaten 180 to help New Zealand register a seven-wicket win against South Africa at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Wednesday.

The five match series is now levels at 2-2 with final match to be played on 4th March at Auckland.

Guptill, who was forced to sit out the opening three matches because of injury, blasted a sensational 180* off 138 balls.

Guptill, coming back from a five-week injury layoff, beat Kane Williamson's previous record of 145 against the Proteas in Kimberley in 2013.

The 30-year-old blasted 11 sixes and 15 boundaries in his swashbuckling 138-ball knock.

His 159-run partnership with Ross Taylor (40) was also New Zealand's highest ever ODI partnership against South Africa.

The pair were still batting as New Zealand were 230 for two late Wednesday chasing South Africa's target of 280.

Batting first after winning the toss South Africa posted 279 for eight, with A B de Villiers top scoring wtih 72 not out.

Faf du Plessis made 67 and Wayne Parnell scored quick 29 off 12 balls before he was run out.

De Villiers' innings, the 52nd ODI half-century of his career, featured three sixes and four fours. Off spinner Jeetan Patel was the most sucessful of the Black Cap bowlers taking 2 for 57.

The middle order then failed to capitalise as they lost four wickets for 28 runs in 10 overs as New Zealand dragged themselves back into the match.

De Villiers, however, again combined with the bowlers to finish off the innings as they scored 104 runs in the final 10 overs, with 72 coming in the final five.

The 32-year-old combined with Chris Morris (28) for 58 runs before he added 63 runs with Wayne Parnell, who bludgeoned 29 runs from 12 balls.
