Tamim, Shakib fire Bangladesh to biggest win

Bangladesh 320 for 7 (Tamim 84, Shakib 67, Mushfiqur 62, Perera 3-60) beat Sri Lanka 157 (Perera 29, Shakib 3-47, Rubel 2-20, Mashrafe 2-30) by 163 runs

Dhaka: The opener hit his second successive fifty while the allrounder followed his 67 with three wickets to crush Sri Lanka by 163 runs at Mirpur on Friday.

As a result, they folded for 157, ensuring a mammoth 163-run victory for hosts in the ongoing tri-series (also involving Zimbabwe).

By virtue of another defeat, Sri Lanka remain winless in the tournament. Seems the Lankans will take a lot of time to revamp under Chandika Hathurusinga.

Electing to bat, Bangladesh got off to a flier. Anamul Haque and Tamim Iqbal built a solid foundation with a 71-run opening stand.

Angelo Mathews-less Sri Lanka couldn’t get wickets at regular intervals, and cost them dear.

Tamim and Shakib Al Hasan consolidated to add another 99 runs off 75 balls. At halfway stage, Bangladesh were on course for a total in excess of 300.

Bangladesh lost Tamim and Shakib before the duo could register their respective tons.

However, the momentum was carried forward by Mushfiqur Rahim (62) and cameos from Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman.

From Sri Lanka’s perspective, Thisara Perera and Nuwan Pradeep shared five wickets in between.

In reply, Sri Lanka were slow to kick off, and lost wickets in bunches later.

While Kusal Perera failed, Upul Tharnaga, Dinesh Chandimal, Asela Gunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella and Perera managed to get starts.

None of them crossed the 30-run mark, showing complete lack of resistance.

Bangladesh bowlers continued to impress and bowled in right areas. Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza’s early blows set the tone, whereas Shakib and Rubel Hossain combined to enable a 163-run win.

Shakib was adjudged Man of the Match for his all-round efforts (67 runs, 3 wickets).
