Shankar blitz powers Gujarat Titans to the top of the table

Gujarat Titans 180 for 3 (Vijay 51*, Gill 49, Miller 32*) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 179 for 7 (Gurbaz 81, Russell 34, Shami 3-33, Noor 2-21, Little 2-25) by seven wickets

Kolkata: Gujarat Titans jumped to the top of the table with their third win in a row as they beat Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 39 of TATA IPL 2023 at the Eden Gardens.

Vijay Shankar's momentum-changing knock of 51* off 24 balls coupled with supporting acts from Shubman Gill (49 off 35) and David Miller (32 off 18) helped GT chase down 180 after a collective bowling performance, led by Mohd.

Shami (3/33), had restricted the home side to 179/7.

Chasing 180, GT's Impact Player Shubman Gill got the away side off to a breezy start, hitting seven fours in the Powerplay, including three crunching fours through the covers, off Harshit Rana in the third over.

It was Russell who provided the first breakthrough as Saha (10 off 10) miscued a slower one to mid-wicket. GT reached 52/1 at the end of six overs.

Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya got together, mixed caution with aggression and added 50 off 39 balls.

Nitish Rana then brought back Harshit Rana in the 11th over and the move worked as he broke the partnership by trapping Hardik Pandya (26 off 20) LBW.

One brought two as Narine dismissed the set Shubman Gill (49 off 35) who mistimed his loft to deep mid-wicket in the next over.

KKR kept things tight in the next couple of overs before David Miller injected the momentum back with consecutive sixes off Suyash Sharma to accumulate 18 from the over.

Russell then came back and nearly had Miller but Suyash Sharma couldn't hold on to a tough high swirling catch. It was a crucial moment in the game.

With 38 needed off 24, Vijay Shankar went after Varun Chakaravarthy, hammering three sixes to turn the tables and amass 24 off the over. That over put GT in the driver's seat with the away side requiring 14 from 18.

Vijay Shankar kept going from strength to strength as he hit a four and a six off Nitish Rana and brought up his fifty off just 24 balls as GT chased down the target with 13 balls and seven wickets to spare.

Shankar remained unbeaten on 51 off 24 while Miller remained not out on 32 off 18.

Earlier, Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl.

An explosive half-century from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and an entertaining cameo by birthday boy Andre Russell powered Kolkata KKR to 179/7.

Shardul Thakur came to bat at number three, with KKR looking to up the attack.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz unleashed some heavy hits on GT from the other side, smashing Pandya for two sixes and Shami for a six and four.

However, the move to send Shardul at the top backfired as he was caught by Mohit Sharma at mid-on for a duck.

With the help of a six from Gurbaz, KKR reached the 50-run mark in 5.3 overs.

Gurbaz continued his carnage, reaching the second half-century of his IPL career in just 27 balls. His knock had four fours and four sixes.

The 47-run stand between Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer came to an end when Joshua Little trapped Iyer lbw for 11(14 balls).
KKR were 84/3 in 10.1 overs.

Just three balls later, Little also got the wicket of skipper Nitish Rana who was back to pavilion for just four runs which came off three balls.

In the 15th over, Rinku-Gurbaz smashed Rashid, playing his 100th IPL match, for 17 runs.

At the end of 15 overs, KKR were 134/4, with Gurbaz (81*) and Rinku (16*) unbeaten.

Noor Ahmed put an end to his compatriot's heroics, dismissing Gurbaz for 81 (39 balls) with the innings studded with five fours and seven sixes.

Russell was next on the crease and announced his intentions to go big, smashing Rashid for two sixes.

Just when Rinku was looking to go big, he was caught by Joshua for 19 (20 balls).

David Wiese was next on the crease. The duo built a brief partnership, mostly powered by some meaty blows from Russell.
He was, however, caught near the boundary by Rahul Tewatia after an entertaining knock of 34 runs in just 19 balls, which consisted of two fours and three sixes.

KKR ended their innings at 179/7 with Wiese unbeaten at 8*.

Shami was the pick of the bowlers for GT, taking 3/33 in his four overs.

Little (2/25) and Noor (2/21) also delivered economical four-over spells.
