Australia in South Africa, 2008/09, 2nd Test, 4th Day

AB de Villiers and Kallis Fighting After Early Below

Durban: Peter Siddle claimed two wickets on the fourth afternoon to help Australia increase their command of the second Test in Durban, leaving South Africa heading 244 for two at end of day four.

A very commendable stand of 164 has added a new twist to this Test. The target is still 302 away but even at this stage, realistically, two results are possible - a draw or an Australian win. Don't forget SA are one man short. It remains to be seen if Smith comes out tomorrow to repeat his Sydney heroics.

Amla and McKenzie resisted Australia's onslaught with the new ball as South Africa set out on a long battle for survival on the fourth day of the second Test.

Siddle removed Neil McKenzie and then had Jacques Kallis dropped off his first delivery, before he received more reward by dismissing Hashim Amla on what was quickly becoming an unpredictable Kingsmead pitch.

But AB de Villiers was unbeaten on 68 at the break and together with Kallis (84 not out) helped the Proteas consolidate their position in pursuit of an unlikely 546 for victory.

South Africa were 35 for no wicket at lunch.

The hosts were set 546 to win but a more realistic objective was to survive a potential 170 overs to prevent Australia from taking a winning 2-0 lead in the series.

Brief Score: South Africa 138 and 244/2 (Kallis 84*, de Villiers 68*, Siddle 2-39) need another 302 to beat Australia 352 and 331/5 dec (Hughes 160, Ponting 81).
