Australia Reached Semis in Tight Finish

Townsville: Australia qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup on Sunday after surviving a scare against Bangladesh.

The match looked Australia's for the taking after their opponents were bowled out for just 171 in the 43rd over at Endeavour Park in Townsville.

The hosts were rocking at 33-4 in their run-chase though, before captain Will Bosisto (71 not out) once again guided his side to victory, with Travis Head (44) and Ashton Turner (27 not out) providing good support as they finished at 172-5 in the 46th over.

Australian opener Cameron Bancroft (1) survived 13 balls before he was caught behind off the bowling of Taskin Ahmed (2-31) and his departure triggered a flurry of dismissals.

Meyrick Buchanan (zero) was next to go, trapped lbw by Abu Jayed (2-37) before Kurtis Patterson (zero) was also caught behind as they slumped to 11-3.

Jimmy Peirson (21) kept the scoreboard ticking over, hitting a huge six that ended on the roof of the grandstand, but he also departed early, leaving the crease in controversial fashion.

Peirson was run out at the non-striker's end by Soumya Sarkar by what is known as a 'Mankad' - as Sarkar caught Peirson backing up too far, and whipped the bails off as he ran into bowl.

Bangladesh appealed vociferously before a period of consultation ensued, with the umpires and then skipper Bosisto each spending a couple of minutes to talk with the fielding side.

It was fruitless though as they maintained that they wanted to see Peirson – who did not receive a warning - go and he trudged off in shock, to the displeasure of the crowd.

That moment appeared to motivate the Australians though, and while Bosisto was typically defiant, Head played the role of stroke-maker.

He picked the gaps in the field with ease and Bosisto turned the strike over enough to keep them close to the Duckworth-Lewis par score, which at times looked like it might have been called upon with rain in the area.

Head fell with the score on 100 when he was caught on the mid-wicket fence and almost immediately after, Bosisto survived a run out attempt from Salman, in which he hit the stumps but the skipper was safe.

That was as close as Bangladesh got though, as Turner farmed the strike to Bosisto, who became more convincing the longer he stayed at the crease.

He hit seven fours in his 134-ball stay, in what can only be described as a typical captain's knock.

And he carried his side over the line in a run-chase for the third time this tournament as Australia entered the last four.

Earlier, Bangladesh started superbly as Soumya (73) and Liton Das (22) added 64 runs for the first wicket.

Souyma was particularly aggressive, hitting his shots with conviction, and Australia needed a piece of magic to inspire them in the field.

Bancroft was the man to produce the moment of inspiration, with his marvellous direct hit finishing Liton's stay at the crease.

Off-spinner Turner (2-22) then chipped in with the valuable scalps of Anamul Haque (nine) and Salman (three) as Bangladesh lost momentum.

The wicket of Soumya was the big one and it was part-time spinner Head (3-30) who removed him, with Bancroft taking a simple catch at point.

It was the first of four wickets to fall for just eight runs as Head had Nurul Hasan (one) caught thanks to a terrific dive from wicket-keeper Peirson and Al-Amin (one) caught and bowled while Mark Steketee (1-37), in his second spell, removed Asif Ahmed (one) caught behind.

Noor Hossain (17) and Naeem Islam jnr (12) helped take their side over 150 but quicks Joel Paris (2-38) and Gurinder Sandhu (1-34) cleaned up the tail to bowl Bangladesh out with seven overs remaining.
