Benn's Five-wickets Haul Gives Windies Slim Lead

Adelaide: Sulieman Benn's maiden five-wicket haul gave West Indies the edge as the visitors stretched their first-innings lead to 35 runs at stumps on the third day of the second Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

The Australians were bowled out for 439 in the first innings owing to Benn's 5-155, giving away a narrow lead of 12 runs to the tourists. Fast bowler Kemar Roach claimed 3-93 while Darren Sammy took 1-79.

Australia, who began the day on a comfortable 174 for no loss in reply to West Indies' 451 in the first innings, lost opener Shane Watson without adding to their overnight tally.

Sulieman Benn castled the all-rounder for 96 for his first wicket of the day, before the tall left-arm spinner removed Simon Katich for 80.

Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey steadied Australia thereafter, but the Australian captain was sent back by pacer Kemar Roach for 36, before Hussey and Michael Clarke guided the hosts to lunch on 255-3.

Roach struck again to break a threatening 79-run stand for the fourth wicket when he had Hussey caught behind for 41, but Clarke brought up his half-century to lead Australia's charge.

But Benn struck at regular intervals to curtail Australia's run charge. Marcus North was out after top-edging a sweep shot to Dwayne Bravo who was stationed at leg gully for 16, before the dangerous Clarke perished for 71 to the same bowler.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Haddin remained unbeaten on 55 - his first half-century against the West Indies - but the West Indies made short work of the Australian lower order, before captain Chris Gayle and Adrian Barath added 23 quick runs off the remaining four overs to cap off an absorbing day of Test cricket
