Deonarine Recalled For First Test Against Aussies

Bridgetown: Left-handed batsman Narsingh Deonarine was recalled to West Indies' 13-player squad on Wednesday for the first of three Tests against Australia.

Deonarine will hope to add to his eight Tests when the match starts Saturday after scoring a series-topping 582 runs in the regional four-day competition. He is also a useful off-spinner, having claimed 20 wickets this season.

He last appeared for the West Indies in the 2010 home series against South Africa.

Darren Sammy was retained as captain after his team split the one-day internationals (2-2) and Twenty20 matches (1-1) with Australia.

"As selectors, we felt the team did a very good job in the ODIs and T20s under the leadership of Darren Sammy, and we expect them to continue to show that same kind of fight and determination in the longer format," chairman of selectors Clyde Butts said. "It is never easy and we know the Aussies will come hard at us, but we believe we have selected a squad that can do the job and make the people of Caribbean proud.

"Also, we are in the first phase of a long year of international cricket and success would be a key in the continued building of a fighting unit."

All-rounder Ravi Rampaul returns after recovering from a shoulder injury and illness. But there is place for Sunil Narine, Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Bravo or Kieron Pollard, who are all away at the Indian Premier League.

  • Kraigg Brathwaite
