Gayle Double Century Boosts West Indies

Galle: Chris Gayle hammered a robust double century as the West Indies posted an impressive 362/2 at stump on Day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka on Monday.

The left-hander cracked eight sixes and 26 fours in his 247-ball 219 not out for his 13th Test hundred, and his first in the sub-continent, to put his team on course for a big total at the Galle International Stadium.

Openers Gayle and Adrian Barath (50) added 110 runs after their team elected to bat on a good track, the West Indies' second century partnership for the opening wicket in the last four years.

He consolidated his team's position with a 196-run stand for second wicket with debutant Darren Bravo make a half-century, who caught by Samaraweera on Mendis on 58.

Former skipper Gayle, 31, reached his century in style, hoisting off-spinner Suraj Randiv over long-off for the second six in the over.

The 20-year-old Barath, who scored a century on Test debut against Australia at Brisbane last year, looked solid during his 86-ball knock before falling in the penultimate over of the morning session.

Barath, playing only his third Test, was surprised by extra bounce and was caught by Mahela Jayawardene at first slip off Randiv after hitting eight fours.

Gayle started cautiously in the morning before playing attractive shots on both sides of the wicket, hitting three fours in an over from left-arm seamer Thilan Thushara.

He also hit the match's first six, lofting spinner Ajantha Mendis over long-off. He then pulled seamer Dammika Prasad over mid-wicket for another six.

Sri Lanka introduced spin after just 11 overs in a bid to break the opening-wicket stand, but Barath greeted Mendis with a fluently driven four through the covers.

Barath offered a difficult chance when on 35, but Randiv failed to hold on to a return catch in his first over.

All-rounder Andre Russell also made his Test debut for the West Indies, who will play three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 match in Sri Lanka.
