New Zealand v Bangladesh, 3rd ODI, Christchurch

Guptill Powers NZ Cleansweep Bangladesh in ODI Series

Christchurch: Bangladesh and Shakib Al Hasan turned in their best performance of the tour, but is was still not enough to prevent New Zealand from sweeping the series.

Much better performance by Bangladesh - In fact, their best in the series. After being asked to bat, they got into a good position in the 40th over after a poor start but a colossal of wickets saw them squander away their advantage.

In reply, the Kiwi openers came hard after them and were looking well set to take the match by the throttle in the 10th over, when the skipper Shakib al Hasan came into the attack. He put the Kiwi batsmen under pressure and the free flow of runs stopped. But there was no support for him from the other end as runs continued to come and the fielding went from bad to worse.

The skipper gave his team some hope with Guptill's wicket in the 35th Over, but it was too much for Bangladesh. Shakib al Hasan bowled brilliantly for his 4-33 in 10 overs while for the hosts, Martin Guptill played a fluent knock of 91.

Martin Guptill has been named the man-of-the-match for his fine 91 of 91 balls with the bat.

New Zealand clean sweep Bangladesh but the performance from the visitors in this game would have given them some confidence at the start of the Test on Monday, 15th of February, 2010. It is a one-off Test. New Zealand won two of the three matches quite convincingly but tonight, they were given a run for their money by the young Bangladeshi side. The Kiwis would now be hoping to fine tune their performance in the Test and get ready to take on Australia later this month.

Earlier, reckless batting towards the end from Bangladesh. They started off badly, losing their first two wickets pretty quickly but then, stable partnerships in the middle order saw them in a good position in the 38th over.

However, their captain started the slide, playing a needless pull shot and Bangladesh derailed from there, losing 6 wickets for just 58 runs. Even the Batting Powerplay went unused as only 32 runs were scored in 5 overs for the loss of 2 wickets. The last 10 overs yielded just 43 runs for the loss of 5 wickets.

Imrul Kayes played a superb knock of 101, reaching his maiden ODI ton. But once his skipper departed, he ran out of partners and Bangladesh collapsed. They are clearly 20-30 runs short. However, it has been a much better batting performance than the previous two games. Tim Southee and Daniel Vettori were the bowlers who stood out, picking up 6 wickets amongst themselves for just 79 runs in 20 overs.

241 for 9 (Kayes 101, Southee 3-37, Vettori 3-42) by three wickets
