Intikhab, Afridi Hail Miandad's Appointment as Batting Coach in CT

Karachi: Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam and all-rounder Shahid Afridi hailed former captain Javed Miandad's appointment as the batting consultant of the side, saying it would help the batsmen fine-tune their craft before the Champions Trophy.

"Given Miandad's experience he will be very useful to the team specially the younger players," Alam said.

Afridi, who led Pakistan in the one-off Twenty20 International in Sri Lanka, echoed Alam's view and said, "It is a decision of the board. Miandad is a great player and we can learn a lot from him. His induction should be beneficial to the team."

The Pakistan cricket team returned home from a disappointing tour of Sri Lanka last night and coach Intikhab Alam made it clear he would not hesitate to step down if he felt he couldn't contribute to the team.

"I am working hard with this team and I have produced results. I know we had a bad tour of Sri Lanka but I know we are capable of bouncing back soon," he said.

"I wouldn't say Sri Lanka played better cricket than us but they took full advantage of two bad sessions that we had," Alam added.

The former captain said Pakistan had a good One-day squad to do well in the coming Champions Trophy in South Africa and also dismissed reports of infighting in the team.

"Whenever we lose a series, we hear or read the usual stories about discord in the team which is simply not true," he said.

Meanwhile, Afridi said he thoroughly enjoyed captaining Pakistan in the Twenty20 match and was happy that his team-mates gave their best.

"I told them we are the Twenty20 World Champions and we must prove our victory was not a fluke. I am happy everyone responded so well," he said.

Afridi said it was an honour leading Pakistan and if the board ever wanted him to captain the side in all forms of the game, he would accept the challenge.
