Bangladesh vs India, 1st Test, 5th day, Chittagong

Mishra-Ishant Powers India Win First Test

Chittagong: India defeated Bangladesh comprehensively by 113 runs in the first Test at Chittagong to go up 1-0 in the two-match series

India have won the opening Test by 113 runs on the final day. The visitors picked up the important wicket of Mohammad Ashraful early in the morning session and that put pressure straightaway. Ishant Sharma bowled brilliantly today and Zaheer Khan kept a nagging line.

At one stage it looked as if Bangladesh would be bowled out very soon after the Lunch break with the home team losing wickets at a brisk pace. However, Mushfiqur Rahim decided to counter-attack, bringing down the margin of loss. He chose the aerial route quite often, delighting the crowds and even struck his Maiden Test century. The tail-enders gave him good support putting in some useful partnerships. Amit Mishra, the lone specialist spinner again picked up four wickets to round off a good performance.

Shahadat, Shakib and Rahim were outstanding in their own departments for Bangladesh.

Earlier, Ishant Sharma struck twice to help reduce Bangladesh to 136 for 5 at lunch on the fifth day of the first test on Thursday.

Bangladesh, who resumed their second innings on 67 for 2 chasing an improbable target of 415 for victory, lost Mohammad Ashraful for 27 in the fourth over when the former captain's reckless drive gave Rahul Dravid a simple catch at second slip.

Raqibul Hassan, beaten by a good length ball off Ishant that struck him off the pad on backfoot, was then adjudged lbw for 13.

Occasional spinner Virender Sehwag ended the resistance of opener Tamim Iqbal shortly before the break. Tamim, caught by Dravid at slip, had made 52, his third test fifty.

Bangladesh still trailed India by 278 runs after the tourists declared their second innings on 413-8 on the fourth day.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan, who has made 11 runs, will resume after the break with his deputy Mushfiqur Rahim alongside him on one.
