Pattinson Out of India ODI Series

Sydney: Paceman James Pattinson has been ruled out of Australia's squad for the one-day series in India with a back injury, Cricket Australia said on Sunday.

The fast bowler will be replaced by Victorian teammate and all-rounder John Hastings in the one-day squad.

"During the past week James has complained of some back stiffness during preparation for the second Test of the tour of India in Bangalore," Australian team physiotherapist Kevin Sims said in a statement.

James's symptoms were consistent with a low back bone stress injury and scans have confirmed the early stages of a low back stress fracture.

He has therefore been withdrawn from the one-day squad as he will require a period of rest from bowling and he will be closely monitored by Victorian and Cricket Australia medical staff to determine his return to cricket.

Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said Hastings was an exciting prospect in Australian cricket.

"John Hastings performed very well at interstate level last year across all formats of the game," Hilditch said.

These efforts saw him rewarded with the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year at the Allan Border Medal and the selectors see him as a very exciting prospect.

It is disappointing for James Pattinson to suffer an injury at this stage. However, it does present a great opportunity for John to show his potential at international level prior to selection for the 2010-11 ICC Cricket World Cup on the subcontinent.

Australia play India in the one-day internationals in Kochi (October 17), Visakhapatnam (October 20) and Goa (October 24).

Squad Michael Clarke (capt), Cameron White (vc), Doug Bollinger, Callum Ferguson, John Hastings, Nathan Hauritz, James Hopes, Michael Hussey, Clint McKay, Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine (wk), Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner, James Pattinson
