Rohit Ready For Captaincy Challenge

Mumbai: Rohit Sharma went out of the Indian team, suffered an injury that cost him vital games and then got involved in a brawl with a spectator that cost him his full match fees.

One felt the frustration of being on the sidelines was getting to him. The last few days have, however, brought some cheer for Rohit Sharma. On Wednesday night, the talented Mumbai batsman was named captain of the Board President's XI team to take on Sri Lanka in a three-day game at the BKC from November 11.

On Thursday, it emerged that Australian side New South Wales, which won the inaugural Champions League in India recently, is interested in recruiting the 22-year-old for the KFC Big Bash - the Aussie domestic T20 competition.

"I didn't even know about this warm-up game against Sri Lanka until last night," Rohit told TOI after finishing off with a Times Shield Division A game for IOC against Western Railway 'B' at the Mahalaxmi ground on Thursday.

"I look at this as both an opportunity and responsibility," he said, while taking off his wicketkeeping pads. With nothing at stake in the game, Rohit decided to try his luck as a 'keeper.

Sharma has a good record with the Board President's XI, having scored 105 against the visiting Aussies last year. Captaining the side is an idea that excites him. "I have captained my school team (Swami Vivekananda), Indian Oil and my club Parkophene a few times, and I have a reasonable record," he says.

Considering that only a few days back, he was pulled up by match referee Prakash Bhatt for threatening a ill-behaved spectator with the bat while playing in the West Zone T20 game against Maharashtra in Pune, captaincy is a big promotion.
