Australia in South Africa, 3rd Test, 4th Day

South Africa Defeat Australia by Innings

Cape Town: Johnson 123 (103b, 11x4, 5x6) and Andrew McDonald 68 (99b, 9x4) shared an Australian record seventh wicket stand of 163 to delay South Africa's consolation victory. Australia won the series 2-1.

Left-arm spinner Paul Harris took six for 127 and fast bowler Dale Steyn three for 96. Harris declared Man of the Match.

South Africa were on course for a crushing victory when Australia lost their sixth wicket at 218, still 224 short of avoiding an innings defeat.

They put on 163 in 122 minutes off 161 balls to break the Australian seventh wicket record against South Africa of 160 by Richie Benaud and Graham McKenzie in 1963/64.

The game was lost on day 1 when Australia folded up for a below-par 209. The pitch remained batting friendly throughout and South Africa bossed around with the bat and the ball till Mitch came on to play an entertaining knock.

This was Steve Bucknor's last Test.

Brief Score: South Africa 651 (de Villiers 163, Prince 150, Kallis 102) beat Australia 209 (Katich 55, Steyn 4-56) and 422 (Johnson 123*, McDonald 68, Katich 54, Harris 6-127) by an innings and 20 runs.
