Victoria v Wayamba, CLT20 2010, Centurion

Victoria Search for Big Win Against Wayamba

Centurion: Considering their negative net run-rate, the Victorian side would be hoping for a massive win against Wayamba.

After all, with performers like Nannes, Siddle, Clint McKay, David Hussey, Aaron Finch and Brad Hodge, Victoria would be expected to beat most sides it meets in Twenty20 cricket.

Victoria currently stand on 4 points and this is their final match. Wayamba have no points, and though they have two matches in hand, their Net Run Rate is so much in the red that even if they win both, qualification for the semi-finals will not happen.

Brad Hodge returned to the line-up for the game against Chennai while Rob Quiney slipped down the order. Injuries notwithstanding, Victoria could retain the same XI.

Victoria will be aiming to not only win this match, but win big. Their Net Run Rate is a negative 0.4. This is considerably off the Warriors, who have +0.975, and way behind Chennai's massive +2.56. What victoria need to plan for is Chennai beating the Warriors in what will be the final league game for both those sides, since only that result would bring Net Run Rates into play.

John Hastings mixes it up well when bowling and was Victoria's best bowler against Chennai, picking up 2 for 22 in four overs.

On other-hand, Wayamba need not worry about Net Run Rate calculations, but they will be worried about their pride. As the only representatives from Sri Lanka, Wayamba have not cut a great figure so far, and felling a big team such as Victoria, will undoubtedly give the team a glow, even if they don't make the semi-finals.

There were problems aplenty for Wayamba against Chennai. Welegedara was smashed for 47 in four overs while Mendis went wicketless for 45. The allrounder Farveez Maharoof missed that game with injury and, if he recovers, will be a boost in both departments.

Watching Isuru Udana bowl sometimes makes one think if he is a spinner with a longish run-up. Such is his preference for the slower ball. But he's been very effective, with 25 wickets in 16 games at 15.32 for his team. Far less sparing in his use of variation than most other seamers, Udana's skill will be tested against an explosive Victorian opening pair.

Against Chennai, Hussey and Finch picked Ashwin's variations well and targeted him for harsh treatment. The rest of the line-up, however, floundered against Muttiah Muralitharan and Suresh Raina. Like Ashwin, Ajantha Mendis has a deceptive carrom ball, but is coming into the match after a thrashing at the hands of Chennai's batsmen, a game in which Rangana Herath fared marginally better.
