Yusuf, Ashwin Likely to Make Cut for ODIs

Kolkata: India are almost certain to miss the services of Yuvraj Singh for the three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting in Jaipur on Sunday.

The Krishnamachari Srikkanth-led national selection panel will meet here on Tuesday to pick the 14-man squad for the first two ODIs. The series moves on to Gwalior on February 24.

Yuvraj had sustained a ligament tear in his left wrist during the Test series against Bangladesh last month and is likely to undergo a surgery in Australia soon.

Yusuf Pathan, who recently guided West Zone to a world-record chase of 536 against South Zone in the Duleep Trophy final with a fantastic knock of 210, is expected to replace him. Pathan last played for the national team in the ICC Champions Trophy last year. Ravindra Jadeja is likely to get the axe, leaving Pathan as the sole all-rounder in the squad.

Harbhajan Singh has opted out of the first two ODIs because of his sister’s marriage and Tamil Nadu spinner R Ashwin is tipped to be included in the squad as his replacement. A toss-up between Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha will decide the second spinner’s slot.

There also might be a few changes in the fast bowling department, which will be led by Zaheer Khan, as both Ishant Sharma and S Sreesanth are likely to be left out of the ODI squad and Karnataka pacer Abhimanyu Mithun, who impressed one and all with his performances in the recently-concluded Ranji Trophy, is the strongest contender for a berth.
