1st Test - England 236/5, Pietersen, Flintoff Rescue England

Kingston: It was an intriguing day of test cricket, with West Indies taking early wickets and putting England under the mat. England needed a magnificent innings of 97 from Pietersen to pull them out from the initial setback. Flintoff has been playing well for his 43 and along with Prior, have so far managed to build a fifty partnership. For West Indies, Benn was clearly the pick of the bowlers troubling each and every batsman with his flight and turn.

Kevin Pietersen fell three runs short of a century as England struggled in their surprise trial by spin at Sabina Park.

Pietersen, who relinquished the England captaincy last month, was attempting to bring up a 16th Test hundred in spectacular style when he perished to tall left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn.

But the 28-year-old's 172-ball effort stood out during a laboured start to the four-match series by Andrew Strauss' team.

No England batsman looked to have mastered the steady, if not menacing West Indies attack which featured a marathon 33-over spell from Sulieman Benn. But Pietersen showed his class in three and a half hours at the crease and looked set for another Test hundred, after clattering two fours and a six off successive balls from Benn.

Brief Score: England 236/5 (Flintoff 43*, Prior 27*) v West Indies.
