Australia v South Africa, 1st Test, Brisbane, 2nd day

Australia-South Africa 2nd Day Wash-out

Brisbane: Day two of the first Test between Australia and South Africa at the Gabba has been officially washed out.

Not even a single delivery was bowled on Saturday as hours and hours of relentless rain in Brisbane forced umpires to abandon play just after 4.00pm local time.

It is the first time a full day has been washed out at the Gabba since the fifth and final day of the Australia and Pakistan Test on November 29, 1983.

Play was scheduled to begin on Saturday at 9.53am, but the heavens opened just as most punters were making their way inside the stadium.

Earlier, early lunch was taken as rain continued to prevent a start.

The wicket remained covered amid persistent rain with the Brisbane forecast for more rain throughout Saturday.

South Africa went to Friday's first day stumps at 255 for two with Hashim Amla not out 90 and Jacques Kallis on 84 after winning the toss.

The Proteas suffered a significant blow overnight with confirmation that batsman JP Duminy was out of the three-Test series with an Achilles injury.
