England v New Zealand, 1st NatWest ODI, Lord's

England Looks Improved ODI Records

London: England captain Alastair Cook expects New Zealand to be far stronger in an upcoming one-day series after inflicting Test humiliation upon the Black Caps.

England completed a 2-0 series whitewash with a crushing 247-run win in the second Test at Headingley concluded Tuesday -- a match where Cook became the first England batsman to score 25 Test hundreds with a second innings 130.

But the teams have now switched formats, with the first of a three-match one-day series taking place at Lord's -- where England won the first Test by 170 runs after New Zealand collapsed to 68 all out -- on Friday.

However, when the two sides met in limited overs action in New Zealand earlier this year, the results were much closer.

Now the tourists have also been bolstered by the arrival of several experienced one-day specialists ahead of next month's Champions Trophy tournament in England and Wales featuring the world's top eight teams in 50 overs per side cricket.

On otherhand, New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum hopes a change of format and the introduction of several new players will revive his side from the depths of a Test whitewash when they face England in a three-match one-day series starting at Lord's on Friday.

For both teams, this series will serve as a warm-up for next month's ICC Champions Trophy tournament in England and Wales.

McCullum would also like it to act as a pick-me-up for a squad that suffered a 247-run hammering by England in the second and final Test at Headingley on Tuesday.

Friday's match will see New Zealand return to Lord's where they lost the first Test by the comparatively modest, yet still huge, margin of 170 runs after collapsing to 68 all out in their second innings.

Stats and trivia

  • The previous series between these two teams in England was a feisty affair with New Zealand emerging 3-1, a result mostly remembered for heated scenes at The Oval when Paul Collingwood controversially ran out Grant Elliott.
  • This is only the second bilateral one-day series between the teams in England since 1994. In 1999 there was the World Cup and in 2004 a triangular series with West Indies.
  • Stuart Broad's current strike-rate of 32.20 places him eighth among bowlers with more than 150 ODI wickets
