Two West Indies Players Pick CLT20 Over Tests

St Vincent: Two West Indies players who were considered for selection in the first Test against Bangladesh in St Vincent have decided to play for their franchises in the Champions League T20.

The WICB did not reveal the name of the players but stated that the decision to not play the Tests will not impact their selection for future West Indies matches as the CLT20 had an ICC approved window on the international schedule.

The CLT20 qualifying stages begin on September 13 in Raipur while the main tournament begins on September 17. The first Test between West Indies and Bangladesh begins on September 5 while the second Test begins on September 13.

The Barbados Tridents, who secured victory in the 2014 CPL, have qualified for the main draw. Jason Holder, who was part of the Tridents squad, has been picked for the first Test and might miss the second. There are seven West Indies players who are representing the IPL franchises in the CLT20. Sunil Narine will play for Kolkata Knight Riders, Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith and Samuel Badree for Chennai Super Kings while Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard will play for Mumbai Indians.

Before the start of the New Zealand Test series in June, Narine was involved in a conundrum as he chose to represent KKR in the IPL final over a West Indies training camp for the first Test which was to begin on June 8. Narine was not considered for selection in the New Zealand series and that paved the way for the return of Suleiman Benn and Shane Shillingford.

Bravo's case is also interesting, considering the fact that he last played a Test in 2010 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. He had told in an interview to Line and Length that he wanted to play more Tests after suffering a shoulder injury at the start of IPL 7

The squad picked for the first Test was the first one picked by Clive Lloyd, the head of the new WICB selection panel. In the 13-man squad, Leon Johnson, who was initially selected was cut from the squad.

West Indies squad: Denesh Ramdin (capt & wk), Chris Gayle, Kraigg Brathwaite, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Jermaine Blackwood, Kemar Roach, Jerome Taylor, Jason Holder, Shannon Gabriel, Sulieman Benn, Shane Shillingford.
