New Zealand v Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Dunedin, day 4

Sri Lanka Struggle in imposing 405-run target

Dunedin: Sri Lanka, faced with an imposing 405-run target, were in a fight for survival at 109-3 at stump on the fourth day of the first Test against New Zealand on Sunday.

Dinesh Chandimal was on 31 and Kusal Mendis caught behind by wicketkeeper BJ Watling on 46 when rain force early close.

Dimuth Karunaratne (29) was the first batsman to fall when he tried to lift a short ball from Southee over the slips to be caught by Watling, before Wagner had Udara Jayasundera caught down the leg side by the wicketkeeper for three.

While the hosts are in the driving seat in the opener of the two-match series, Sri Lanka have shown they will not go quickly or quietly, with the openers taking 23 overs to reach 50.

New Zealand needed 117 overs to bowl them out for 294 in the first innings.

The middle session was extended after a brief but heavy rain shower disrupted play at University Oval for about 20 minutes.

Earlier, the hosts had surprisingly declared their second innings closed at 267 for three shortly before lunch with Tom Latham having reached his first century on home soil.

Captain Brendon McCullum, no doubt aware of possible disruptions with expected poor weather in Dunedin throughout Sunday, was on 17 when he called time on New Zealand's innings, having hit a six to take their lead past 400.

The six, the second of his short innings, also moved him into a tie with former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist with 100 career sixes, the most in test cricket.

A hailstorm then brought an early lunch with Sri Lanka 4-0 in their pursuit for the target.

Latham, whose previous two test centuries were scored in the United Arab Emirates last year against Pakistan, was left on 109 not out.

He had resumed on 71 and had some luck on 73 when he nicked a Nuwan Pradeep delivery but the ball flew between wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal and Karunaratne, who was standing at a wide first slip.

He also got a thin edge from a Suranga Lakmal delivery when on 83 only for the ball to fall short of Chandimal, while on 97 he survived a confident lbw appeal and a review from Herath.

Latham, who appeared to have hit the ball first, was credited with two runs from that shot then flicked a single off Herath two balls later to bring up his third test century.
