Anil Kumble named new India Head Coach

Dharmashala: Anil Kumble was appointed as new India cricket team coach by BCCI president Anurag Thakur after his name was recommended by cricket advisory committee members Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman. He will take over the role for a period of one year.

Initially the members sought more time to confer but that timeline was pushed back to today and at a press conference, Kumble was handed over the reigns of the team.

Kumble has served as mentor for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Questions will be raised over his appointment given the lack of experience at the top level.

He comes in as first coach since Duncan Fletcher’s contract expired after the was axed in 2014. Ravi Shastri was officially the ‘Team Director’ after the Zimbabwean.

BCCI had received 57 applications for the post and narrowed it down to 21 before handing over the list to CAC that interviewed the candidates shortlisted by them. Among them were Shastri, Lalchand Rajput, Pravin Amre, Kumble, Tom Moody, Stuart Law and Andy Moles
