2nd Test - West Indies 258 For Six At Stumps Day One

Napier: West Indies were 258 for six at close of play on the first day of the second Test against New Zealand after electing to bat at McLean Park. Chanderpaul and Nash came together with West Indies in trouble at 74 for four on a perfect batting wicket but safely navigated the second session to add 163-runs and Westindies reach 258 for six at stumps day one.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 100, with Brendon Nash dismissed for 74. Iain O'Brien has two wickets for 59 and Daniel Vettori two for 58. Chanderpaul was not out 100 (224b, 9x4, 3x6), while JE Taylor 1* on crease with Chanderpaul. BP Nash make maiden half century in his second match. He caught by Flynn on 74 (162b, 12x4) bowling by Franklin.

West Indies captain Chris Gayle won the toss and chose to bat on a sunny day with not a cloud in sight, but was left regretting that decision after being reduced to 74 for four at lunch thanks to steady bowling and brilliant New Zealand fielding.

Gayle made his customary blistering start, smashing five boundaries in his 34 before Iain O'Brien produced a brilliant ball which squared him up and caught the edge of his bat through to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum.

An aggressive Ramnaresh Sarwan looked to continue the onslaught and raced to 11 before he tried to cut off-spinner Jeetan Patel and gave a faint edge to McCullum.

O'Brien claimed his second scalp when Xavier Marshall edged a ball to second slip and Jesse Ryder dived to his right to take a superb catch just centimetres from the ground.
