England v Australia, 1st T20I, Old Trafford

England-Aussie 1st Twenty20 Match Abandoned With Oz on top

Manchester: England's first meeting with Australia since regaining the Ashes was abandoned Sunday after persistent rain wiped out the first of two Twenty20 Internationals.

England had been reduced to 4-2 in just 1.1 overs in reply to Australia's 145-4 before the rain stopped play.

After Old Trafford missed out on hosting an Ashes match, Manchester's cricket fans will hope Tuesday's second Twenty20 match at the same venue is not also a washout.

Earlier, Cameron White made England pay for a dropped catch, hitting a half-century for Australia to set the home side a victory target of 146 in the first of two Twenty20 matches on Sunday.

White had scored 12 runs when he was dropped by Joe Denly, who was making his international Twenty20 debut, and went on to make 55 off 36 balls.

Having lost the toss and being sent in to bat, Australia reached 145-4 at Old Trafford.

Shane Watson was first out for 10, lofting a short, sharp delivery from Stuart Broad to Ravi Bopara at mid-wicket.

Captain Paul Collingwood next removed David Warner for 33, trapping him leg before.

He claimed a second wicket in three balls when David Hussey went for a two-ball duck as Matt Prior stumped him charging down the wicket.

White, who hit the first six of the match in the 16th over, was removed in the penultimate over when he was caught by Collingwood off Broad.

Collingwood finished with figures of 2-20 off four overs and Broad 2-33 off his four

Brief Score:
Australia: 145 for 4 (White 55, PD Collingwood 2-20, SCJ Broad 2-33)
England: 4 for 2 (MG Johnson 1-1, Brett Lee 1-3)
Result: Abandoned
