India v Australia, 1st ODI, Vadodara

Harbhajan, Praveen Create New World Record

Vadodara: India may be one down against Australia but the home side will take heart from the Indian tail's rearguard action that gave the World's number one side more than a scare. Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar's spectacular partnership almost pulled off an impossible win in Vadodara, where India fell short by four runs in a humdinger.

The tailenders showed resilience and courage that the the Indian top order lacked and though the home side lost the game, the duo's valiant effort with the bat broke a few records.

The eighth wicket partnership of 84 runs between Harbhajan and Praveen is India's best for this wicket against all countries, obliterating the unbroken 82 run-partnership between Kapil Dev and Kiran More against New Zealand at Bangalore in 1987 World Cup.

Harbhajan also reached the personal land mark of 1000 runs during his breathtaking innings of 49. He achieved this milestone when he was on 43. This milestone is inclusive of two matches he played against African XI in which he had aggregated 24 runs.

Praveen Kumar, playing in his fourth match against Australia and his 17th one day international, managed to achieve a career best individual score when he made an unbeaten 40 off 32 balls. His previous highest was a modest 15 off 21 balls against Sri Lanka at Colombo on January 31, 2009.

Tim Paine scored his second successive fifty (50 off 62 balls) against India. In his first match against India at Centurion during Champions Trophy.

Playing in his 36th match for India, Ishant Sharma took his 50th wicket in One-day Internationals by getting rid of Tim Paine. He is the 26th Indian and 206th player in the world to take 50 or more wickets in One-day Internationals.

Ponting was playing in his 50th innings and 50th match against India. He also extended his own highest run aggregate against India scoring 1852 runs. This also happens to be his highest run aggregate against any country surpassing the previous best of 1795 runs against South Africa in 45 matches and 1795 runs against New Zealand also in 45 matches.

Brett Lee, with the wicket of Virender Sehwag, completed his 50 wickets against India. He is the first bowler to reach this landmark in India-Australia matches. Lee was playing his 29th ODI against India.
