RCB Face Lions in Virtual Quarter-final

Johannesburg: The Champions League T20 format was supposed to be simple, with a league phase via which four of the 10 teams would qualify for a semifinal showdown.

But fortunes have swayed back and forth despite the presence of at least three non-performing sides, setting the stage for a virtual quarterfinal at the Wanderers on Tuesday.

In Group B, one IPL side, the Mumbai Indians, is out of the reckoning while for the other, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Tuesday evening's clash against local team Highveld Lions is a winner-take-all battle.

Whoever triumphs on the night will move to Durban as the second-placed team in the group behind toppers South Australian Redbacks, and take on the leading team in Group A at the Kingsmead ground. At the moment that could be any of three teams.

"Yeah, it is a quarterfinal for us. I think the team is really keen to get through the semis and once you get there it is anybody's game," said Anil Kumble, skipper of RCB.

The Bangalore side went down by two runs to Sachin Tendulkar's Mumbai Indians in Durban on Sunday but the narrow margin of loss has allowed them to stay on top of the net-run-rate table, which will come into effect if and when they beat the Lions in their own den.

"The boys are certainly disappointed with the result against MI but even if we had won, we still would have had to beat the Lions. So nothing changes. It is just that now we don't have to look at the NRR.

The only result we need against the Lions is a victory, which we will certainly look forward to," said Kumble, referring to the fact that they are already ahead on the NRR and a win, while putting them on equal points with the Lions on four, will only push the NRR further up.

This will be RCB's first game at the Wanderers, and their only one here if they don't make the final. The bounce and the pace off the wicket will be more here than at the spongy surface in Durban.
