RP Singh Replace Injured Zaheer in England

Northampton: RP Singh is going to England as Zaheer Khan's replacement for the remaining two Tests and ODIs, as the pacer failed to recover from the hamstring injury.

The Indian team finally gave up its ludicrous attempt to hoodwink fate. Early in the morning on Sunday, as many expected, it declared that Zaheer Khan was not available for the rest of the series.

In an official release, signed by BCCI secretary and president-elect N Srinivasan, it announced that the fast bowler needed four months to recover completely. "He will therefore not be able to participate in the ongoing Test series and the subsequent T20 international and one-day series," it said.

For all those who saw Zaheer go through his paces, ambling in for a few deliveries at nets and eventually bowling three overs in the two-day game against Northamptonshire, the diagnosis was obvious a long time back itself. But what exposed the team management and the support staff completely was the opening line of the statement.

"Zaheer is suffering from a recurrent right hamstring strain and a right ankle impingement," it said. Even more damagingly, it added: "He will require surgery for his ankle, followed by intensive rehabilitation for the ankle and the hamstring."
