India tour of Srilanka 2008, ODI Series, 2nd Match Preview

Second One Day India v Sri Lanka, Wednesday August 20, 2008

Dambulla: After loose first One-day, opening is a big problem for India, because first Sachin and now Virendra Sehwag out of series. In first ODI under-19 team captain middle order batsman have floped in opening partner with Gautam Gambhir.

Injuries to Sachin, during the third Test, and Sehwag, during training on the evening a day before first One day. Infan Pathan may be open with Gambhir in 2nd ODI on Wednesday because 70 domestic matches Subramaniam Badrinath has never opened like Kohli. The only other other chance Parthiv Patel open the inning with Gambhir but he is no specialist opener (open just 4 match).

Tendulkar's 13,245 runs and 38 centuries as opener is beyond compare, while Sehwag's ability to provide explosive starts and tackle Sri Lanka's spinners was paramount. With the BCCI deciding not to send a replacement for Sehwag - how this team could do with a Sourav Ganguly now - India are left with only one specialist opener in Gautam Gambhir.

India are known to be slow starters in any series, and they have the ability to bounce back in the remaining matches. But some serious introspection is needed if India aim to leave Sri Lanka unscathed. They can start by thinking out of the box.
