New Zealand v SLD XI, Colombo, 1st day

Tuffey Stars in Comeback Opening Game

Colombo: New Zealand began their tour of Sri Lanka with a good bowling performance, dismissing a Development XI side for 159 on the first day of the three-day tour match in Colombo. Daryl Tuffey, making a comeback to the New Zealand side after his ICL stint, picked up three wickets to help bundle out the hosts.

After electing to bat, the home side lost both their openers, Tharanga Paranavitana and Mahela Udawatte, in the space of seven deliveries to slip to 34 for 2. Dinesh Chandimal, who was part of the Sri Lanka's 2008 World Cup Under-19 squad, was the only batsman who made an impression, scoring 64 in 131 balls. Farveez Maharoof provided him some support, and the pair added 44 for the sixth wicket, but offspinner Jeetan Patel struck twice in two deliveries to hasten the end. The final four wickets went down for 24 runs.

All the New Zealand bowlers were among the wickets, with fast bowler Chris Martin and spinners Patel and Daniel Vettori bagging two wickets each.

Martin Guptill could not get much batting practice as he was dismissed for 6, but Tim McIntosh and Daniel Flynn batted through to the close of play to ensure the visitors lost just the one wicket in their reply.

New Zealand play one more three-day tour game on August 12 before the first Test, which starts on August 18 in Galle.

Brief Score: New Zealand 43 for 1 trail Sri Lanka Development XI 159 (Chandimal 64, Tuffey 3-41) by 116 runs.
