West Indies in England and Ireland 2017

Gayle, Samuels make return to West Indies ODI squad

St. Lucia: The big-hitting 37-year-old opener Chris Gayle and all-rounder Marlon Samuels have both been named in West Indies ODI squad for the upcoming series against England and Ireland next month. The side will be led by Jason Holder

Chris Gayle is set to play his first one-day international in more than two years. Gayle last played an ODI in the 2015 World Cup quarter-final but returned for West Indies in a Twenty20 against India last month following an improvement in player and board relations.

Veteran seamer Jerome Taylor is another back in the squad which begins its campaign with a one-off ODI against Ireland in Belfast on September 13 before facing England in a five-match Royal London Series.

West Indies ODI squad for Ireland and England series: Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Miguel Cummins, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder (captain), Kyle Hope, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed (Vice Captain), Ashley Nurse, Rovman Powell, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor and Kesrick Williams.

Chris Gayle has racked up 9,221 runs in 269 ODIs -- returns along with fellow veterans Marlon Samuels and Jerome Taylor to add much-needed class to the squad.

The once dominant West Indies are under fire form all sides after their Test team's abject performance in the first Test defeat -- by an innings and 209 runs -- against England inside three days at the weekend.

However, the likes of off-spinner Sunil Narine and batsman Darren Bravo have not agreed to return to the fold.
