Ashwin's 12-wicket Sets up Innings Win

Hyderabad: Ravichandran Ashwin 12-wicket haul helped India to bowl out New Zealand to 164 in second innings and register the innings and 115 runs victory in the first Test at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

New Zealand, following on after conceding a 279-run lead, were bowled out for 164 in their second innings in the final session.

Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha continued with their magical spell after the tea as they claimed Kiwis' last four wickets in the span of 6.5 overs to power India to a crushing victory.

India lead the two match series 1-0 with the second match will be played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium from August 31.

Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha gave New Zealand another jolt as he dismissed Doug Bracewell soon after the tea on the fourth day of the first Test .

Following on, Kruger van Wyk and Doug Bracewell took New Zealand's second innings score to 146/6 at tea on the penultimate day.

Virender Sehwag took a superb diving catch at first slip to dismiss James Franklin off R Ashwin.

Ashwin delivered an off-spinner around off that spun away with extra bounce, Franklin opted to defend it from the crease but it took the shoulder of the bat. The ball travelled quickly behind the stumps and Sehwag stretched to his right at first slip and snapped a ripper of a catch.

New Zealand lost their fifth wicket when R Ashwin trapped Daniel Flynn plumb in front of the wicket.

Ashwin dished out an off-spinner on off and it straightened a shade after landing. Flynn attempted to sweep it across the line but missed and the ball thudded on the pads.

Kane Williamson hit his fifth half-century before falling to Pragyan Ojha.

Williamson edged a classical left-armer delivery into the hands of Virender Sehwag at first slip.

R Ashwin dismissed New Zealand captain with a beauty of a delivery as the Kiwis lost their third wicket.

Ashwin bowled an off-spinner with nice flight and turn from the wicket, Taylor shouldered his arms to let it through but the ball curled back in to hit the top of off stump.

India got a lucky breakthrough after lunch when Brendon McCullum was adjudged out leg before wicket off Umesh Yadav despite an inside edge.

Yadav bowled a full length delivery around off, curling into the batsman with the shine, McCullum got on the front foot to defend but missed and was hit on the pads. Indians appealed and umpire Steve Davis raised his finger.

An unhappy McCullum walked off the field shaking his head as he had curbed his natural instincts to score 42 runs off 130 deliveries.

McCullum and Williamson batted patiently in the first session of the day to defy India and take their score to 92/1.

Start of play on the fourth day was delayed by 90 minutes due to rain.
