Bhajji's Hummer Enters Police Records

Chandigarh: Harbhajan Singh’s Hummer made it to UT police’s record book on Wednesday when he was challaned for driving it in the city without properly displaying the SUV’s registration number.

SP (traffic) HS Doon said a fine of Rs 3,000 had been imposed on Harbhajan under provisions of Motor Vehicles Act.

Harbhajan was travelling with cricketers MS Dhoni and RP Singh in the SUV on Monday. Apparently, cops did not stop the massive, black vehicle, when it was driven all the way from Jalandhar to the city to pick the star bowler from Chandigarh airport and drop him at Taj hotel in Sector 17. A senior traffic official said they had got the information on Monday that the SUV was not displaying a number but could not verify it.

"Today, when we saw pictures and media reports, we decided to issue a challan," said the official.

Inspector Naresh Pal Verma, who visited the hotel on Tuesday to check the vehicle, found a temporary registration number slip pasted on it. Cops said that law required the temporary number to be painted in large, legible letters. After the inspection, Verma issued the challan.

UT IG SK Jain said, "Everyone is equal before the law. So, the challan was handed out."

Harbhajan had said previously that the earlier paper slip bearing the number might have been washed away in rain. "I have got three photo copies of that slip inside the vehicle," he had stated.
