Chawla to Play For Surrey in 2010

London: India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla will play for Surrey in 2010, the English county announced on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old impressed for Surrey's southern rivals Sussex last season, taking 36 first-class wickets at an average of 27.25.

He has also appeared in two Tests and 31 one-day internationals for India.

Chawla made a huge impact during his first period in English cricket last year, first scoring 102 not out from 86 balls and then taking six for 152 as Sussex beat Worcestershire by 10 wickets.

In his second game he took impressive match figures of 11 for 170 against Somerset.

When he returned to Hove, Chawla dismissed Warwickshire's England batsmen Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott before taking match figures of nine for 249 off 87 overs against Yorkshire.

But Chawla's efforts were not enough to prevent Sussex being relegated to the Second Division of the County Championship, where they will play Surrey next season.

Chawla will join up with Surrey at the conclusion of the next edition of the Indian Premier League, where he represents the Kings XI Punjab and has so far taken 29 wickets at a fine average of just 24.03 apiece.

He is the third player to join Surrey in the close season, following the arrival at the Oval of England duo Steven Davies and Gareth Batty from Worcestershire.

"There were two clear objectives in picking our overseas signing for next season," said Surrey manager Chris Adams, who as the Championship-winning captain of Sussex was able to call upon the services of Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed.

"I wanted the player to be of true international class and I wanted them to be able to commit to spending the vast majority of their season with us - Piyush fulfills both requirements handsomely.

"There is a fine spin tradition at Surrey which runs from Jim Laker and Tony Lock to Ian Salisbury, Harbhajan Singh and Saqlain Mushtaq and I hope our latest arrival will one day take his place alongside those names."
