India vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Test, 1st Day, Mumbai

Harbhajan, Dilshan Heros of 1st Day of Final Test

Mumbai: An exquisite 109 from Tillakaratne Dilshan helped Sri Lanka reach 366 for 8 at the end the opening day of the third and final Test against India in Mumbai.

On a lively pitch, Dilshan and Angelo Mathews (86 not out) ensured the match, which the tourists must win to level the series, remains evenly poised.

Sri Lanka raced to 93-0 in 19.5 overs, but were pegged back as India got three middle-order wickets. Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was the pick of the bowlers with 4-107

366 runs scored in 90 overs by the batting team and 8 wickets picked by the fielding team. The honours are evenly shared. Sri Lanka started off well with a 93-run opening stand and continued to have good partnerships throughout the day.

The run-rate was in check, constantly hovering in between 3.7 and 4. However, apart from Dilshan, no other batsman could convert their starts into a big one. Dilshan scored his 11th Test century, his sixth in 2009.

All the batsmen revolved around him and when he got out, Angelo Mathews took on that role. Mathews is currently batting on 86 with Muralidaran at the crease and Welegedera to come. Indian bowlers would be happy with 8 wickets taken but they were inconsistent with their line and lengths throughout the day.

Sri Lanka might well be hoping that the remaining two batsmen, too, support Mathews and help their team reach 400 and get him his maiden Test century. India, on the other hand, would be hoping to knock out the remaining two wickets as quickly as possible early in the morning.

Brief scores
Sri Lanka: 366/8 (Dilshan 109, Mathews 86*, Harbhajan Singh 4-107)
