Centurion: Jacques Kallis's participation in this Test was in such doubt last week that South Africa packed him off to an oxygen chamber to hasten his recovery from a rib fracture.

The last session has named the day in South Africa's favour. The hosts end the day on 262/4, scoring 103/0 in 35 overs.

Earlier, they lost the toss this morning and were put in to bat and were in trouble straightaway with Broad removing Smith for a duck. Amla, Prince and de Villiers steadied the innings with useful partnerships but the man of the day was the man who is still fighting with a rib injury - Jacques Kallis. He is still out there, unbeaten on 112, reaching his 32nd Test Century and his 6th against England.

He held his side together and had a good partner in JP Duminy and the pair are unbeaten at the end of the day and have added 103 for the fifth wicket so far. England would have wanted more wickets with the new ball up front but could not get it.
