West Indies v Australia, 3rd Test, Roseau, 1st day

Shillingford Puts West Indies on Top

Roseau: Australia's batsmen again struggled as they fell to 212 for seven at stumps on the first day of the third Test against the West Indies in Dominica.

Despite almost every Australian batsman getting a start, none could make more than David Warner's 50 as spinner Shane Shillingford took four wickets to keep the tourists on the back foot.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Australia's innings got off to a disastrous start when opener Ed Cowan again failed with the bat, trapped by Ravi Rampaul for one in the second over.

Warner and Shane Watson steadied the ship though, with both players showing unusual patience as they went about building their innings.

But with the score on 84, Watson played a loose stroke and was caught in the deep by Narsingh Deonarine for 41.

Warner made it to his half century off 136 balls, but was out soon after when he misjudged the extra bounce off a Shillingford delivery and was caught at cover-point.

It was the first time the left hander has reached 50 without going on to make a century.

Captain Michael Clarke joined predecessor Ricky Ponting at the crease, and the pair moved the score along to 3-142 before Shillingford struck again; his turn and bounce too much for Ponting (23) who inside edged one to Darren Sammy at leg slip.

Clarke followed soon after for 24 after gloving a Shillingford delivery to Adrian Barath at short leg, before the Dominican spinner claimed his fourth wicket when Mike Hussey edged to Sammy at slip on 10.

Matthew Wade was doing his best to hang around for Australia, but when Kemar Roach had Ryan Harris caught for four trying to hook a short one, the Aussies had lost 4-27 and were struggling at 7-169.

Wade (22no) and Mitchell Starc (24no) were able to see out the remaining overs though, keeping the scoreboard ticking over as the tourists passed 200 and kept their hopes of posting a decent total alive.

All four of the West Indies full time bowlers snared a wicket with Shillingford the pick of the bunch, finishing with 4-77 from his 34 overs as the hosts took the honours on the first day.

Harris and Starc were the two inclusions for the Australians, with the duo replacing Michael Beer and the injured James Pattinson in the final XI.
