Indore: Unlike last year, when most of the Indian stars were busy with the inaugural Champions League, this year's Challenger Trophy has increased significance.
With just over four months to go for the World Cup, and with a few slots up for grabs, this tournament offers hopefuls a golden chance.
Except for a memorable triumph in the inaugural World T20, India's performance in ICC tournaments hasn't been great. So the national selectors too will be keeping a keen eye on this year's edition of the Challenger Trophy.
India Blue will be led by Yuvraj Singh, fresh from a double hundred in the Irani Trophy. Yuvraj's brutal innings against Mumbai underlined his strong desire to fight his way back into the Indian team.
A good performance from this mercurial left-hander will come as huge relief for the Indian team management since he is crucial to the team's plans for the World Cup.
After a poor outing in Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli too will have a point or two to prove. They were exposed in bowler-friendly conditions in Dambulla but both are proven match-winners in Indian conditions. All they need is to show a bit of application and patience on wickets that have something for the bowlers.
The selectors will also have a close look at Saurabh Tiwary, who has been improving with every game. The Jharkhand youngster batted superbly on the bouncy tracks of South Africa against some good bowlers in the Champions League.
Apart from his skill, he showed improved temperament, always a good sign for Indian cricket. Robin Uthappa, once an integral part of the ODI team, too would like to impress the selectors.
Then there are the bowlers, most of them struggling either with injury or loss of form. The left-arm duo of RP Singh and Irfan Pathan will be looking to impress, as will youngsters like Sudeep Tyagi, Ashok Dinda, Abhimanyu Mithun, Umesh Yadav, Yo Mahesh and Abu Nachim.
