Australian Ashes Squad to be Named on Monday

Sydney: Selectors will unveil their thinking on the likely makeup of the Australian team when they announce a squad on Monday for the opening Ashes Test against England.

The selectors met on Sunday to choose their squad for the first Test in Brisbane, starting on November 25.

Vice-captain Michael Clarke, paceman Doug Bollinger and opening batsman Simon Katich are all expected to be included in the squad after injuries.

Clarke's long-time back injury flared when batting for New South Wales in their weekend Sheffield Shield game against Victoria, preventing him from fielding the next day.

Bollinger is expected to play in a Shield game for New South Wales this week after bowling 10 overs in weekend club cricket to test out his recent stomach strain injury.

Katich (thumb) also had his first bat in six weeks in weekend club cricket.

Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch will announce the squad in Sydney.

England captain Andrew Strauss has seized on the uncertainty surrounding the Australian team, saying it will work in the tourists' favour.

"Everyone likes stability and security and knowing where they stand," Strauss said before his tourists headed to Hobart and their last warm-up game against Australia A starting on Wednesday.

And in Australia's case, that is not the case - then that could be a good thing for us.
