West Indies v Australia, 1st Test, Bridgetown, 2nd day

Chanderpaul Leads Way For West Indies

Bridgetown: Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit his 25th Test century as West Indies piled-up 449 for nine declared to take a firm grip on the first Test against Australia.

Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 103 from 248 deliveries when captain Darren Sammy declared the innings at 9-449.

In reply Australia reached 44 without loss in 9.5 overs before bad light stopped play.

It was a determined innings from Chanderpaul, who occupied the crease for just under six and a half hours on an ideal batting wicket after the Windies resumed at 3-179.

The number five batsmen received good support from his team-mates and for the first time in Test history every West Indian reached double figures.

Darren Bravo made 51, joining Kirk Edwards (61) and Kraigg Brathwaite (57) as top-order half-century makers for the hosts.

Sammy himself compiled an entertaining 41 from 36 balls and his quick-fire knock brought the third session to life.

The match had been meandering, with the West Indies steadily advancing to 6-342 until Australian vice-captain Shane Watson felled Sammy with a bouncer in the 121st over that cracked the back of his helmet.

Sammy, suffering from the blow to his head, responded by hitting three sixes before he was caught at mid-wicket attempting a pull shot off paceman Ben Hilfenhaus.

With wickets tumbling around him, Chanderpaul didn't panic in his quest for his 25th Test century.

It seemed for a moment that he would be denied a well-deserved century when number 11 batsman Devendra Bishoo edged Hilfenhaus just short of a diving Ricky Ponting at second slip but the left-hander held his nerve to turn Hilfenhaus out to square leg for two to bring up the ton.

He has now scored centuries against Australia at all five Caribbean grounds on which he has played them.

Australia's bowlers were made to toil through 153 overs, with part-time spinner Warner (2-45) and paceman Ryan Harris (2-83) the only multiple wicket-takers.

Peter Siddle (1-83) bowled well without luck, while frontline spinner Nathan Lyon toiled through 31 overs for 1-94.

Sammy's declaration gave his fast bowlers just under an hour to attack Australian openers Dave Warner and Ed Cowan.

But the two left-handers, playing their first Test outside Australia, made it to stumps untroubled. Warner was unbeaten on 27, with Cowan on 13.
