England Ahead After Record Partnership

Nottingham: England on ahead after Joe Root and James Anderson broke the record for the highest 10th wicket partnership in Test history. India were 167/3 at stump on day 4, lead by 128-runs.

James Anderson made 81, the highest score by an England number 11, and Joe Root 154 not out, putting on 198 to help them to 496 - and an unlikely first-innings lead of 39.

Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara hit half-centuries when India replied, but they fell to successive balls late on as the tourists closed day four on 167-3 - 128 in front.

India started off their second innings on a strong note with Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay batting confidently. Dhawan struck six fours in his knock before he drilled a low full toss back to Moeen Ali to depart for 29.

Vijay continued to enjoy his fine form as he notched up his fifth fifty and he was ably assisted by Cheteshwar Pujara, who also scored his fifth Test fifty. However, Moeen broke the 91-run stand when he had Vijay caught behind for 52 and Pujara departed immediately for 55 thanks to a juggling effort from Ben Stokes at backward point.

Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane ensured that there were no further jolts as India ended the day on 167/3, ahead by 128 runs.

However, the talking point undoubtedly was the world record 198-run stand between Root and Anderson. Both batsmen batted with maturity and with confidence. They complimented each other and were involved in a competition of who would protect whom. They took turns in farming the strike and the end result was Root reaching his fourth Test century while Anderson recorded his maiden Test fifty. This Test will also be remembered as been the first instance where the last wicket partnership of both teams went past 100.

Anderson broke another record. He registered the highest ever score by an England No. 11, going past John Snow's 59 against the West Indies at The Oval in 1966. He looked good to reach a century before Bhuvneshwar Kumar snapped him up for 81.

In the process, Bhuvneshwar recorded his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests. No wickets fell in the first session as the Indian bowlers lacked penetration. Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma struggled for consistency while Ravindra Jadeja disappointed.
