Hobart Hurricanes Destroy Tridents, Make it to Semis

Chandigarh: Hobart Hurricanes beat Barbados Tridents by six wickets and reached in semi-final. Xavier Doherty picked up a brilliant 4-wicket.

Shoaib Malik and Jonathan Wells dug in and took Hobart Hurricanes past the Barbados Tridents' modest 113, after four quick wickets had set their chase back, but the Australian team were never truly troubled by their target, becoming the second team to qualify for the semi-finals from Group B after Kings XI Punjab.

Barbados Tridents, the Caribbean Premier League T20 champions, couldn't replicate their strong batting show from their two previous games as, after being put into bat by the Hurricanes, were bowled out for 113 at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Sunday.

After losing Neil McKenzie in the second over without scoring, the Tridents never found momentum, while the Hurricanes continued on their bowling form just as they had finished off against Northern Knights in their previous fixture.

The Tridents' decision to bring in McKenzie and Kyle Mayers backfired, as the former South Africa opener was the first to go off the bowling Doug Bollinger, and the procession of wickets continued as no batsman managed to stay at the crease long enough.

Xavier Doherty starred for the Hurricanes with the ball taking 4 for 27 in a superb display of left-arm spin during the middle overs, but it was Ben Hilfenhaus' third over that did the Tridents in during the fifth over.

Raymon Reifer miscued a pull before Dilshan Munaweera, one of their consistent batsmen during the competition, flicked one straight into Aiden Blizzard's hands off the very next ball.

Jonathan Carter, who scored an unbeaten century against the Cape Cobras in their previous match, top-scored with 42 but found the going tough without any support from the other end.

Staring at a straightforward run chase, the Hurricanes got off to a shaky start as Ben Dunk fell in the first over, and Tim Paine and Aiden Blizzard found it tough to get going.

Both Blizzard and Paine were back in the pavilion before the halfway mark, and left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein had Travis Birt bowled for his second wicket, but Shoaib Malik (39*, 35b, 3x4) and Jonathan Wells (23*, 17b, 1x4, 1x6) combined for a timely stand to see the Hurricanes through with 10 balls left.

Earlier, Hobart Hurricanes  have won the toss and have opted to field.

Tridents have brought in Kyle Mayers in place of Jeevan Mendis while Hurricanes are unchanged.
