Bangladesh Cruises to Huge Win

Abu Dhabi: Bangladesh stormed to a comprehensive nine-wicket victory in the ninth place play-off quarter-final against Canada in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

Inserted in at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, only three Canada batsmen reached double figures as it was bundled out for 75 in 27.1 overs. Bangladesh wasted little time, racing to the target in 13.5 overs and winning with 217 balls to spare.

Bangladesh needed around three runs per over for to overhaul the 76-run target, but openers Shadman Islam and Joyraz Sheik decided to go at a gallop. Bangladesh was three runs short of victory when Sheik fell for a 35-ball 33, caught by Nikhil Dutta off the bowling of Armaan Kapoor. Islam (35), alongside Zakir Hasan, then finished it off two overs later.

Winning the toss and opting to field, the Bangladesh bowlers justified captain Mehedy Hasan's decision immediately. Medium-pacer Mustafizur Rahman trapped Sudeepta Aurka (2) in front in the third over and followed it up by castling Nitish Kumar for a first-ball duck in his next over. Canada failed to recover from the early shocks, free-falling to 28 for 6 in 11 overs as Rahman and offspinner Saeed Sarkar troubled the batsmen with a combination of spin and pace.

Barring Tahla Sheikh (10), Abraash Khan (12) and Keenan Tinto (16), the rest of the batsmen had single digits to their name. Rahman returned figures of 3 for 11 in his six overs, taking his tally in the tournament to seven wickets, while Sarkar bagged 2 for 15 in his seven overs. Hasan was equally tidy in his five overs, chipping in with two wickets.
